Back in Lebanon: tension is high

Lebanese opposition rally in center of Beirut

After spending a month in Europe it feels great to be back home again, but at the same time the tension in Lebanon has clearly risen since last month.

All the countries of the world seem to be interfering in the process to chose a consensus president for the elections due the 21st of this month, however, nothing indicates that such a consensus is taking place.

If everybody is keen on respecting the will of the Lebanese People why don’t they then revert either to early parliamentary elections or to electing the president through popular vote,  in order to go out of this stalemate.

The formalistic argument ( saying that the constitution does not foresee early elections ) is ridiculous. No constitution ever foresees early elections, they are always a measure that people take in order to go out of a crisis, given that they have the goodwill to go out of that crisis.

In Lebanon it is clear that only the opposition is willing to revert to the people and accept the verdict of an early election, while the government is only willing to listen to whatever the Americans are hoping for.
